Assembly Republicans call for action on "Patriot Plan II"

Assembly Republican Leader Charles H. Nesbitt and Assemblyman Roy J. McDonald have called on Assembly Democrats to move forward on "Patriot Plan II," legislation that will assist military personnel and their families. The comprehensive package of tax and other benefits for military men and women is a follow up to last year's historic legislation enacted to help New Yorkers called to serve in the War on Terror. Governor Pataki supports the package and the Senate stands poised to act on the measure, but the legislation has not even been introduced in the Democrat-controlled Assembly, according to a press release from the Assembly Republicans.

"It is only appropriate following Memorial Day weekend, after we have honored the sacrifices of our military veterans, that we now offer support to the thousands of young New Yorkers who willingly disrupt their lives to answer their nation's call to serve," said Leader Nesbitt (R,C-Albion), a highly decorated former helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. "These proposed enhancements to the Patriot Plan will provide a measure of comfort to those who go into harm's way to protect our freedoms. Assembly Democrats need to put politics aside and act on this package to aid our troops."

Highlights of the legislation include initiatives that would exempt Guard's pay from state taxes; increase pay for New York state military personnel; assist local governments; expand eligibility for tuition awards; extend certain tax return deadlines; ease the ability for dependents to qualify for certain benefits; and provide free hunting and fishing licenses.

"The men and women who volunteer to serve in the New York National Guard and Reserves don't hesitate when duty calls," said Assemblyman McDonald (R,C,I-Wilton). "The Governor and the Senate have shown their support for this legislation. It is time for the Assembly Democrats to show support for our troops and bring this bill to the floor for a vote."
