On Sunday, July 4, the annual Old Fashion Fourth of July will see the return of The Excelsior Cornet Band as part of holiday events on the Morgan-Manning House lawn in Brockport. The Brockport High School Band also returns as a traditional feature. more

Brockport's connection to the late President Ronald Reagan
She was a three-year-old girl standing amidst a throng of adults who were anxiously waiting to meet Ronald Reagan - she was much too young to know who he was or what was going on but the man who would go on to be president singled Laurie Gurnett out of the crowd for a bit of a conversation. more

Brockport Farmers Market opens June 20
More than 15 local area farmers have signed up to participate in the Brockport Farmers Market. They'll be offering the best in New York grown produce, picked fresh off the farm each week. And each week will feature an entertainment or activity by local groups. more

Community helps fund camp endeavor
June 9 was a day of fun and festivities at the Brockport Tim Hortons. The company's Camp Day was observed and celebrated with children's activities, special offers and community support. more

Lakeside Foundation elected three new members to its Board of Directors. At the Foundation's May Board meeting, John Heise, Nat O. Lester, III, and Teresa L. Werth were elected to each serve a three year term. more

At the Annual Awards Dinner Meeting of the Genesee Valley Nurses Association on May 18, the Nurse Administrator of the Year award was presented to Carolyn Vacanti, VP Clinical Operations/Chief Nursing Officer at Lakeside Memorial Hospital. more

The Monroe County Fair is accepting applications for its annual Talent Show. This year's show will have a junior and senior category. The junior show is open to individuals and groups 12 years of age and under. The senior show is open to individuals and groups 13 years of age and up. more

Stamp Show highlights postal history and auxiliary markings
Members of the Rochester Philatelic Association host the ROPEX Stamp Show, June 18-20 at the Webster Community Field House, 800 Five Mile Line Road, Webster. Hours are 10-6, 10-5 and 10-4, respectively. Admission and parking are free. The facility is all at street level and handicapped accessible. more

Sweden's Town Park sees lots of activities
The cries of "play ball" were heard as 25 softball teams made their way to Sweden's Town Park over the weekend of June 5-6. The park also hosted a full soccer schedule. more

Adopt-A-Highway workers
As part of its ongoing expanding community service projects, the Brockport Kiwanis Club has recently adopted a portion of Rt. 19 in the Town of Sweden. From Colby Street to Beadle Road on Route 19 is now the local responsibility of the Kiwanis Club to maintain as part of the New York State Adopt-A-Highway program. more

Black Creek Watershed Coalition to host public meeting
The Black Creek Watershed Coalition will host a public meeting on the Black Creek Watershed Plan on Wednesday, June 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Genesee Community College, Rooms T119A and T119B, 1st floor of the Conable Technology Building; those attending can use the south entrance. more

Canal Days canoe race participants sought
The Spencerport Canal Days canoe race will be held on Sunday, July 25 at 1 p.m. The canoe race committee is looking for interested organizations, businesses, and individuals to participate. Call 352-2124 to register. Registration is $25 per canoe. more

Chili trail closed for work
Due to the construction of a section of trail along Scottsville Road in the Town of Chili, there will be construction activity on the Genesee Valley Greenway Trail. From the intersection of Scottsville and Paul Road south to the CSXT rail crossing there will be activity along the southbound lanes. more

Community Free Library presents Elizabeth Tone awards
Each year, the Community Free Library in Holley presents the Elizabeth Tone award to a junior in the Holley and Kendall High School. The award was established in 1976 by the Friends of the Library in memory of Elizabeth Tone. more

Hours for DMV Mobile Units extended
The county-run DMV Mobile Units will be open an additional half-hour from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Previously, the mobile locations closed at 3 p.m. more

Town of Ogden opens boat launch
On Thursday, June 22 at 10 a.m., the Town of Ogden will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil their new boat launch to the canal. The boat launch is located at Arrowhead Golf Club at 655 Gallup Road. more

Traffic advisory issued for Route 19
from Canal in Brockport to Route 18 in Hamlin

NYSDOT Highway maintenance forces is working on a project to mill and repave Route 19 in the Village of Brockport, Monroe County, between the Erie Canal Lift Bridge and West Avenue. The road work is expected to be completed by Friday, June 18 or earlier. more

Brockport village elections June 15
Voters in the village of Brockport will be asked to choose two candidates from a field of four in the June 15 election. The trustee seats of Morton Wexler and Peter DeToy are up for grabs with Wexler seeking re-election to his second term as a trustee. DeToy will not be running this year. more

Churchville Elementary celebrates Arbor Day
Students and staff at Churchville Elementary School celebrated Arbor Day by planting a lilac bush in the memorial garden located in front of school. This bush was planted as part of the Village of Churchville Arbor Day festivities. more

students win at statewide competition

BOCES 2 CTE students won at Skills USA statewide competition held at Alfred University. First place winners in the statewide competition will compete in the national competition in Kansas City, Missouri. more

Hilton Board of Education appoints
new principal at Northwood Elementary

On May 27, the Hilton Central School District Board of Education approved the appointment of Kirk Ashton as Principal of Northwood Elementary School. Ashton, currently Assistant to the Principal at Rush-Henrietta Central School District's Monica Leary Elementary School, will begin work July 1. He replaces Interim Principal Donna Hofsess. more

The Hilton-Parma Seniors will be traveling to the Medina Stone Farm, in Medina, on Wednesday, July 14. The trip includes an all-you-can-eat luncheon feast prepared from Amish and Mennonite recipes. more

Clark named Hilton Female Athlete of the Year
After being named Underclass Female Athlete of the Year last season, Hilton senior Marisa Clark wrapped up a successful sports career at Hilton High School by being named Hilton High School Female Athlete of the Year for 2003-2004. more

Climb up to the sky in Parma
Children will have a new playground piece to enjoy as Parma just installed an 18-foot long, seven foot high rock climbing wall at Town Hall Park. Located next to the red and black playground structure erected last fall, this rock climbing piece was purchased to complement the play area according to town officials. more

"Start Smart" sports development program - Wednesdays, June 23 to August 4, or Thursdays, June 24 to August 5, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Hamlin Town Hall gym. Open to children ages 3 to 4 with a parent. more

Target Archery program offered
A target archery program for youth and adults is now being organized by Hilton-Parma Recreation that will mirror the same shooting event that was held at the Senior Olympic Games in 2003 and will be held at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. more

The Victors Gymnastics Team of Greece competed in the Level 4 Team Cup and Level 5 State Championships, June 5-6 in Orchard Park, New York. more
