Local high school juniors attend Empire Girls State

Three high school juniors, representing three units of the American Legion Auxiliary, have been selected to attend the Empire Girls State Sessions at Brockport college, the week of June 27 through July 3, 2004.

These young women are Rebecca Hyland, Churchville-Chili, from the Harvey C. Noone Unit; Lisa Bush, Hilton Central, Doty Magill Post and Lauren Jewett, Rush Henrietta, Ferris Goodridge Unit. They will be among the 360 juniors who will form two political parties and live together as self governing citizens to solve the concerns of their counties. At the end of sessions they elect senators and judges as well as a governor.

Hyland, daughter of Bruce and Denise Hyland, is a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Math League and bible study club. She won third place in a talent contest for singing and playing an original composition on piano and plans to study law or language.

Bush, daughter of Brad and Doris Bush, is a member of the National Honor Society, Mock Trial, soccer, basketball, Interact Club, National Helpers and tutors chemistry students. She is a member of Civil Air Patrol and travel soccer.

Jewett, daughter of Jim and Vicki Jewett, a junior at Rush Henrietta school, is representing the Ferris Goodridge Unit #330 in Spencerport. She is a member of the National Honor Society, member of the National Helpers Club, varsity cross country, indoor and outdoor track and has walked for MS, breast cancer, worked on Special Olympics and Make A Difference Day. Jewett also helped with a holiday party at Ibero Day Care Center, senior citizens breakfast and mentoring at Burger Middle School.
