In an election overshadowed by what some village residents called "political nastiness," residents in Brockport remained true to the village's non-partisan tradition. Mayor Josephine Matela agreed that the campaign got a little nastier than she imagined it would.

Incumbent Mort Wexler and newcomer Carrie Maziarz were chosen by the voters to help lead the village. They defeated Republican-endorsed candidates, Robert Connors and Norm GianCursio for two seats with four year terms at the polls June 15.

Wexler, who ran on the Freedom Party Line, led the race with 606 voters. Maziarz garnered 556. Connors received 509 votes, GianCursio, 378. Village Clerk Leslie Morelli said that voter turn-out was heavy. This year there were 2,700 registered voters in the village and close to 1,100 turned out to cast their ballots.

Wexler, a retired school teacher from the Brockport district, said he was seeking his second term because he still had a lot to offer the residents. "I'm truly elated and appreciate the support of the people," he said. "I will continue to do my best for this community and I can't thank (voters) enough."

Maziarz, who is the coordinator of Brockport's new farmers market and a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, ran on the Pro-Village Party Line. "Thank you everyone who voted for me," Maziarz said after the polls closed. "I will do my very best to serve you and honor the promises I made in my campaign."

Matela said that now that the election is over, it's time to get back to the business of running the village. "The results of the election verify that the people in this village want to maintain non-partisan politics," she said. "I'm thankful the people came out to make their voices heard."
