'Kindness Week' celebrated by Brockport students

Because being kind to others is such an important part of every day life it has been turned into a week-long lesson for second- and third-graders at Brockport's Barclay Elementary School. They recently deemed one week as Kindness Week, with the theme of "Kindness, Pass it On."

Teachers recognized acts of kindness by giving students stickers with a domino on them and by putting a domino in a container to help students visualize how kindness multiplies. Students set up domino chains to demonstrate how one good idea leads to another. They read poetry and quotes of kindness for their classrooms and hallways.

Tony and Dee of WARM 101.3 ran an assembly, "Let My Spirit Soar," which included songs and storytelling. At an assembly to conclude the week, 23 students, called the Junior Builders, led the students through some dance moves they learned from SUNY Brockport Dance major Jessica Blaida. The Junior Builders were selected by their teachers to learn how to build assets, like self-esteem and caring, through a district-wide asset building initiative. The elementary students have also met with asset development teams from the middle school and high school, whom they call their "big buddies."
