Officials break ground for canal side community center

Village trustees, Town of Sweden officials and other dignitaries joined Brockport Mayor Josephine Matela to turn the first spade of earth for the new canal side community center on Water Street at Harvester Park. "This community center is another example of this administration's commitment to improving the quality of life for village residents and the greater Brockport community," said Metela. "It provides a vital focal point, a place where families can enjoy the waterfront."

As part of phase two of the 1997 Canal Revitalization Master Plan, the center will feature public restrooms for visitors attending events in the village. A meeting room will be available to community and civic groups for meetings and events at no charge. The area surrounding the center will be graded to accommodate picnicking and public assembly at the waterfront. There will also be handicap parking and ramp access between Water Street and the canal.

Final renovations to the Harvester Park canal side promenade will be completed in conjunction with the visitors' center project. New York State Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation provided funding for the park renovations.
