Caitlin and Jill Bower celebrate Jill's graduation.

Hilton sisters match wits

Jill Bower was a typical tag along little sister. Her desire to emulate her older sister, Caitlin, was many times a source of frustration. Now, as a recent high school graduate, she has decided to copy her big sister again. This time, however, there is no fighting. Jill matched her sister Caitlin's academic feat by becoming salutatorian of the Class of 2004. Caitlin distinguished herself as salutatorian in Hilton's Class of 2001. Both students were offered full scholarships at Canisius College, where Caitlin attends as a bio/chem major. Jill, whose strength lies in creative writing, has opted to attend Nazareth College.

Barbara Carder, Hilton Central School District director of communications, said the Bower sisters distinguished themselves as phenomenally well-rounded students. Both girls played field hockey, performed in the band and took dance lessons. "These are students who not only excelled academically, but were wonderful musicians," Carder said. "This speaks to their depth of character."

While statistically speaking the accomplishment seems quite amazing, the Bower sisters are quick to deflect any attention. "I sacrificed a little sleep, but never had to give up anything else," Caitlin said. "I was lucky that school was fairly easy for me."

Jill said the pressures of school stressed her more than her older sister, but that her good grades were simply a result of always doing her work.

While the sisters are linked by high achievement, they are unique individuals. Caitlin is more outspoken and interested in the sciences. Jill is more introverted and focused on creative writing. She served as the editor of "The Silver Nickel," Hilton High School's literary magazine.

They are the daughters of Gary and Margaret Bower.
