Given a choice of using lethal force or "less lethal" force, Brockport's police chief was determined to allow his officers to exercise the latter and that decision led to the recent purchase of two Taser guns. more

Children receive handmade quilts
First day of school jitters were short-lived at the Brockport Migrant Education Project Summer School, says Principal Betty Svitavsky, as kindergarten and first-grade students picked out their own brightly colored homemade quilt. more

Cool Kids need your cans
More than 9,200 cans were collected as part of the Cool Kids CAN-imals on Parade event held during the Brockport Sidewalk Sale and a little over 400 more have come in since the event, but Cool Kids still find themselves a few hundred cans or non-perishable goods short of the 10,000 can goal. more

For the past 11 months, Karen Leidig has been passing out petitions and giving presentations to politicians in her quest to have the Oliver Middle School lower gymnasium named after her son, Matthew Fitton, whose life was lost in an automobile accident on Redman Road on August 12, 2003. more

Heavy rains pummel wheat crop; peaches fare a bit better
Heavy rains have hindered the harvesting of wheat by at least 10 days and are causing severe quality damage to the winter wheat crop in the Rochester region, according to Agriculture Specialist Bob King of Monroe County Cornell Cooperative Extension. more

Hilton animal shelter continues to grow
A long-time dream of local animal lovers took another real step with the move of The Kathleen Anne Tenny Animal Shelter to a facility twice as large as its original home. The shelter, located at 62 Gorton Avenue, Hilton, is accessible via Old Hojack Road. The new facility greatly reduces overhead costs, will allow for additional space for the facility's feline clientele and offers the ability to add dogs in the fall. more

Hilton Firemen's Parades necessitates road closures in Hiton village
On Wednesday, July 28 from 6:15 p.m. to approximately 8 p.m., the following roads will be closed to all traffic in the village of Hilton for the Hilton Fire Department Kiddie Parade. more

Lakeside moms receive gift baskets
The Chili Senior Center Chain Gang donated baskets of goodies for the new moms at Lakeside to help welcome their newborns and celebrate the happy occasion. Fifteen baskets were donated, each containing a hand crocheted blanket, toy and various infant products. more

New features expand Hilton Carnival offerings
Who says old carnivals can't do new things? Festival-goers who partake in the Hilton Fireman's Carnival festivities on July 28 to 31, will find a new version of the 100-year-old tradition: new rides, bigger bands and no more tickets. more

Ogden's new police chief sworn in
Douglas Nordquist was sworn in as Ogden's Police Chief July 21. He replaces Chris Schrank who served as head of the police department for 12 years before retiring in mid-July. more

Brockport students learn
crime scene investigation techniques

It was CSI: Brockport when high school students in Kris Cyr's Living Environment class concluded the school year by solving a crime. As part of a genetics unit, students compared hair samples under microscopes, typed blood, analyzed fingerprints and footprints, and interrogated suspects to find out who could have committed a (staged) murder. more

GCC offers health care scholarships
Area residents who are children or parents of Genesee Community College alumni and who are interested in entering a health care field are invited to apply for Health Care Legacy scholarships. The scholarships provide $500 to help defray tuition and other costs of any of Genesee's four health care programs: Nursing, Repiratory Care, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Physical Therapist Assistant. more

Kendall Class of 1954 reunion
In recognition of their 50th anniversary, the Kendall Central School Class of 1954 held their first ever reunion at the Kendall Inn on July 10. Twenty-two of twenty-seven graduates are living and seventeen attended with spouses and friends. more
