New features expand Hilton Carnival offerings

Who says old carnivals can't do new things? Festival-goers who partake in the Hilton Fireman's Carnival festivities on July 28 to 31, will find a new version of the 100-year-old tradition: new rides, bigger bands and no more tickets.

Mark Kalen, deputy chief and co-chair, said the committee made some changes to this year's carnival to drive up attendance. "A long time ago we made the decision not to go door-to-door asking for money," Kalen said. "Instead, we run our carnival for four days and ask the community to come out and support us."

Kalen said about 80 percent of the total profit goes toward Hilton's Emergency Medical Services. Hilton remains one of the only volunteer fire departments that also has a volunteer ambulance service. This year's carnival, long touted as the biggest in the state, will boast bigger entertainment. Entercom Radio, who is a longtime advertising partner, is delivering this year's bands: Catch 22, Reporter, Ruby Shooz, Nik and the Nice Guys and Perfect World.

Mike Davis, director of major events and marketing for Entercom, said this line up has the potential to bring in some new faces. "The idea is to try to draw people who might be interested in a specific act and given them a chance to see how great this carnival is," Davis said. "We have something for everyone."

Carnival rides will no longer require tickets. Those wishing to enjoy the rides will pay a flat fee each night of $20 and $5 off tickets are available for Wednesday and Saturday at most Hilton businesses and will also appear in the Suburban News. Riders will also be able to enjoy a new ferris wheel and the drop zone.

The Hilton Zoo (an adult-only area) will also offer games of chance including Over and Under, Black Jack, Beat the Dealer and Big Six. Kids of all ages will be taking to the streets Wednesday and Thursday evenings for two parades. The kiddie parade on Wednesday will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the grand parade will begin Thursday at 7 p.m. This year's Grand Marshall is Senator Joseph Robach.

Wednesday, from 5 to 9 p.m., there will be a Red Cross blood drive at the Firemen's Exempt Hall. Free parking will be offered behind the fire hall throughout the festivities.
