CrimeStoppers cautions public about bogus solicitations

CrimeStoppers, the local funding source that helps law enforcement agencies apprehend and arrest criminals, is being robbed by individuals who are illegally soliciting contributions.

CrimeStoppers does not directly solicit money over the phone and residents should be wary if they get phone calls asking them to donate.

CrimeStoppers does have one annual fundraising drive, usually in early spring, and solicits money through a one day phone-a-thon televised on WOKR Television (Channel 13) and over WHAM Radio on the same day. The funds collected are used to pay for advertisements and to underwrite citizen rewards for assisting in the apprehension of criminals.

Citizens who want to contribute to the CrimeStoppers program can send checks to Rochester Area CrimeStoppers, Inc., P.O. Box 40452, Rochester, NY 14604.
