Hilton Cadets volleyball kicks off new season

Hilton's boys volleyball team returns 11 players to this year's team. After a rebuilding year in 2003, the Cadets look to a mix of experience and youth to lead them in a tough Division II volleyball league. Five returning seniors, three juniors and three sophomores make up the Hilton squad. Seniors Kyle Kanous, Joe D'Angelo and Tyler Gauldin are expected to split time with junior Jesse Rapke at the outside hitting positions. All County selection in 2003 sophomore Cal Palumbo and senior Mike Stanton are expected to supply both offense and blocking in the middle. Defensive Player of the Year in 2003 Casey O'Connell and the addition of sophomore Mike Fowler add skill and athleticism at the setting position. Sophomore Matt Seils starts at opposite with senior Mike Sasson, sophomore Jake Buss and junior Donnie Hebert adding depth off the bench.

The Cadets dropped their first match of the season in a thriller against a very tough Webster Thomas team 25-27, 25-19, 23-25, 25-11 and 23-25. "The guys showed intensity throughout the five game match," said Head Coach Rob Steinorth. Stanton and Palumbo combined for 28 kills, O'Connell and Fowler 31 assists to lead Hilton.

"In a league with exceptionally skilled players, many of whom play year round, we will have to be at the top of our game to compete," said Steinorth. "So far, I like what I see."
