Every fall for the past 24 years, the Hilton community has come together to celebrate the arrival of fall with a festival called Apple Fest. This year's festival will be October 2 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and October 3 from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. more

The Brockport Volunteer Fire Department will be kicking off Fire Prevention Week with a special dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, October 2 at 2 p.m. at their new training facility on Owens Road at the railroad. more

Celebrate fall at Springdale Farm's Scarecrow Festival
Springdale Farm will celebrate fall with a Scarecrow Festival on Saturday, October 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Springdale Farm will be full of autumn adventures such as scarecrow displays, pumpkin picking and painting, a corn play bin, hay mazes, houses and needle in the haystack contests, children's crafts, face painting, the petting zoo in addition to wagon and mini-horse carriage rides (weather permitting). more

Church hosts Community Action Appreciation Day
On Sunday, September 12, Cornerstone Community Church held a Community Action Appreciation Day to honor and thank local and state community leaders and public servants. The event was held during the congregation's regular Sunday morning worship service. more

Dates for local voter registration set
The Orleans County Board of Elections has scheduled voter registration at all town halls within Orleans County on Friday, October 8, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday, October 9, from 2 until 9 p.m. Local registration gives residents the opportunity to register to vote for the November 2 general election and future elections. more

Federal assistance sought for victims of severe storms
Governor George E. Pataki asked President Bush to declare a major federal disaster of 6 counties across the state, making them eligible for federal assistance as a result of a continuing series of strong storms which began in mid-August and continued into this month, causing widespread flood damage. Federal assistance was requested for several counties including Monroe. more

Information sought on POW artwork
For more than 50 years, a painting by former German prisoner of war Kurt Schmale remained tucked away in the duct work of a Hamlin home. Two years ago, homeowner Bill Faill saw something up in the duct work in his basement so he set about discovering what it was. more

Lakeside names Employee of the Month
Lakeside has named Wanda Donald, Certified Nursing Assistant at Lakeside Beikirch Care Center, as September's Employee of the Month. Donald had been with Lakeside Health System for eight years. She lives in Lyndonville. more

Mystery Theatre comes to Brockport
The Brockport United Methodist (BUM) Players will perform on October 29 and 30 and again on November 5 and 6 at the Brockport Middle School Large Group Instruction room theatre. "Mask Murder at Mack's" features many local actors who are members of the BUM players group headed by Gary Thomas. more

Ogden, Spencerport praised for emergency preparedness participation
Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks appealed to local residents when she sounded a call to service, asking them to help with efforts to protect our community and enhance emergency preparedness. more

Police department loses two officers to long term disability
It wasn't an agenda item but the topic of police overtime and the hiring of additional officers to supplement the Brockport Police Department's force was discussed at the September 20 board meeting. more

Wal-Mart not on agenda
As of Thursday, September 23, Wal-Mart had not been added to the Town of Sweden's Planning Board agenda for the Monday, September 27 meeting. more

Boating safety course offered
An eight-hour licensing course for personal water craft operation is scheduled for October 9 and October 16 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Hamlin Town Hall. more

Brockport firefighter's receive new fire truck
Brockport's new pumper 2325 is a 2004 Sabre custom pumper that seats six firefighters in an enclosed cab. This truck sports a 1,500 gallons per minute pump and carries 1,000 gallons of water to the scene with it. more

Church seeks historic artifacts
The Church Historical Group, a newly formed committee of the First Congregational Church of Spencerport held its first meeting. more

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge issues trapping permits
Permits to trap on Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge will be available October 1. The refuge is open to both marsh and upland trapping within state seasons. All trappers must obtain a trapping permit at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, 1101 Casey Road, Alabama. more

Parenting course to be offered in Hilton
"Common Sense Parenting," a practical, skill-based parenting program that can be applied to every family, will be offered for Hilton area parents at the Hilton Community Center beginning October 12 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for six consecutive Tuesdays. more

Quilt show winners announced
Winners of the coveted Viewers' Choice Awards at North Chili Quilt Show were: Janet Root for her bed quilt, "A Step Beyond." It incorporated intricate hand and machine piecing, appliqué and quilting in autumn colors. more

Service plaques awarded to Police Sergeants
Service plaques were awarded to Police Sergeants Dale Barton and Thomas M. Quartley, two long-serving members of the Ogden Police Department. more

Spencerport offering parenting course
The Family Support Center of the Spencerport Central School District is offering a six-session program on "Common Sense Parenting," a skills-based program that teaches parents practical and effective ways of increasing positive behavior in children and ways of providing appropriate alternative behaviors. more

Steve Locke, chemistry teacher at Byron-Bergen Central School District, was awarded the High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year from the Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society. more

B-B welcomes new counselors
Byron-Bergen Elementary school has hired two new counselors. When long-time school counselor Karen D'Aurizio left her position to pursue an administrative career, the district hired Sarah Maciejewski and Teri Henick to work as school counselors. more

BCSD hosts annual fun run
hysical education teachers are getting students motivated to run in Brockport Central School District's Fourth Annual Fun Run for students in grades three through six. more

School recognized for reaching blood drive goals
The New York-Penn Region of the American Red Cross announced the Life Share top sponsors for reaching their blood drive goals. more

SUNY Brockport elects officers, board members
A total of 12 Brockport, Hamlin and Hilton residents have been elected to positions in the SUNY College at Brockport Alumni Association. more

Brockport defeated Spencerport 6-1 in girl's tennis to improve to 3-1 on the season - good for second place behind the Fairport Red Raiders. more

Blue Devils poolers undefeated
After defeating Webster last week for the first time in over 20 years, the Brockport girl's swimming team continued their undefeated season with a 94-82 victory over Churchville-Chili to improve their record to 3-0. more

Cadets shut out Batavia
Celia Patarino and Patty Nellis each scored twice as Hilton blanked Batavia 7-0 in girl's soccer. more

Chandler leads Ranger netters
Tied 14-14 in the fifth and deciding game of their boy's volleyball match with Hilton, Spencerport Rangers scored 11 of the final 13 points to win 25-16 and improve their record to 4-1 on the young season. more

Genesee Valley Hunt races to run
On October 9, the Genesee Valley Hunt Races will unfold on Nations Farm, situated on Nations Road off Route 39, one mile north of Geneseo. This annual event has been taking place for the past 75 years in the scenic countryside of the beautiful Genesee Valley and has become a well-known local racing tradition as horses and riders come from throughout eastern United States and Canada to compete in the various races. more

Northwest Vipers baseball team announces tryouts
The Northwest Vipers Baseball Team is a new team being formed for 13-year-old players in Greece, Hilton and Northwest Monroe County. The team will compete in a Monroe County Travel League and numerous independent tournaments in 2005. more

Rochester based 16U ASA "A" fast pitch travel team will be having tryouts Saturday, October 2 and Saturday, October 9 at Badgerow Park South. more

SUNY Brockport coach to be Wall of Fame inductee
SUNY Brockport's field hockey Head Coach Andrea Zurlo will be inducted as the first recipient of Akron Central School Wall of Fame Team Award. Zurlo was part of the 1992 State Champion Field Hockey Team. more

Sweden Clarkson Recreation Center schedules events
On Saturday, October 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Sweden Town Park (field #5) there will be tryouts for Cal Ripken open baseball. Cal Ripken Baseball is a highly competitive travel baseball league. Players must demonstrate the ability to play at this level to be picked for this team. more
