Genesee Valley Hunt races to run

On October 9, the Genesee Valley Hunt Races will unfold on Nations Farm, situated on Nations Road off Route 39, one mile north of Geneseo. This annual event has been taking place for the past 75 years in the scenic countryside of the beautiful Genesee Valley and has become a well-known local racing tradition as horses and riders come from throughout eastern United States and Canada to compete in the various races.

Youth races featuring two pony races and a junior steeplechase race are scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon. Then at 1 p.m. begins the first of eight horse races, competing on the flat or over jumps and including National Steeplechase Association-sanctioned races. The entire 3.5 mile track can be viewed from the spectator area. Even the dogs become racers, as the Jack Russell Terriers run at 10 a.m. There is also a "puissance" for dogs when three divisions of them take turns in a jumping contest over a barrier.

In addition to the races, there is a parade of the Genesee Valley Hunt fox hounds. Young children (those under six) can participate in a free stick horse race, complete with ribbons. There are also free pony rides for children and horse-drawn wagon rides for everyone.

Another highlight of the day is the elaborate tailgate party competition, in which families display their art of picnicking in the open. A well known restaurateur will judge the displays based on theme, quality and variety of food and drink.

Admission is $8 for adults ($6 advanced sales) and children 12-years-old and younger are free. The event benefits the Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester and the Geneseo Rotary. Information can be found at www.geneseevalleyhunt.org or call 585-243-4218.
