Sweden Senior Center honors volunteers

The Sweden Senior Center hosted their annual volunteer appreciation banquet on Wednesday, September 15.

The banquet, which honored 120 volunteers, was an occasion to celebrate the achievements that seniors have accomplished during the past year. 16,368 hours of service were donated by these volunteers. Achievements range from quilting sleeping bags for the Open Door Mission and Alternatives for Battered Women, participating in mentoring youngsters in after school programs, to line and tap dancing and chorus participants who entertain at schools and adult care facilities, driving seniors to appointments, delivering lunches and beautifying the center. The seniors have led productive, giving lives and continue on, in some cases, well into their 90's.

Steve Newcomb, DHHS/Office for the Aging, on behalf of Maggie Brooks, Monroe County Executive, presented a proclamation commending the volunteers of the Sweden Senior Center for their compassionate service to the community and proclaiming September 15, 2004, Volunteer Day at the Sweden Senior Center.
