Johnson scores twice in Blue Devil loss

Senior Dan Johnson scored touchdowns in both halves, but Brockport was unable to hold off Pittsford in a 45-20 defeat in high school football.

The Panthers took a 7-0 lead on the second play of the game when Chris Strickland bolted for a 90-yard touchdown run. Late in the first quarter, Pittsford's J.B. Monu scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 35-yard run for a 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Blue Devils put together a drive highlighted by a 20-yard third-down run by Kyle Maroney and a fourth down run by quarterback Anthony Rogers setting up Johnson's 21-yard touchdown scamper while bouncing off of several defenders. The extra point missed and Pittsford led 14-6.

The Panthers added another score in the second quarter before the Blue Devils had the ball with less than one minute remaining in the half at the Pittsford six-yard line. After spiking the ball on first down to stop the clock and an incomplete pass, Rogers ran the ball to the three yard-line and, with the clock running and just seconds left, tried a keeper off right tackle that was stopped short at the horn.

The Panthers scored to start the second half after a Brockport fumble on the second half kick-off, but the Blue Devils rebounded when Vitaly Basisty recovered a fumble at the Pittsford 32-yard line setting up a touchdown drive. After a fourth down pass interference call on the Panthers, Rogers rushed six yards to the seven-yard line and Anderson ran the ball to the one on the last play of the third quarter. After switching ends of the field, Anderson scored his second touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed and Pittsford led 28-12.

After another Panther touchdown, Brockport scored their final touchdown. After a 29-yard run by Rogers took the ball to the Pittsford 25, Maroney bulled his way in for the touchdown and also took the ball in for the two-point conversion to cut the Panther lead to 35-20. A late Pittsford field goal and touch down made the final 45-20.

Brockport rushed for 267 yards in the game led by Rogers' 88 and Johnson's 76. Rogers and Bryon Rockow combined for 4-21 passing and 54 yards. Steve Davis led the Blue Devils with eight tackles with Anderson and Maroney each credited with six. The Panthers rushed for 300 yards in the game and had just six first downs. The Blue Devils fall to 1-3 with a win against defending Class AAA champion Gates-Chili.
