$34 million project will reconstruct
West Ridge Road in Greece

A $34 million highway project to reconstruct State Route 104 (West Ridge Road) in the Town of Greece, Monroe County was announced by New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joseph Boardman.

Project elements include the reconstruction of Route 104 (Ridge Road) between the intersection at Elmgrove/North Greece Road and NY 390. The existing pavement will be reconstructed and widened to accommodate three lanes of travel in both directions, with dedicated right turn lanes and a raised median. The drainage system will be replaced.

In addition, the bridges that carry Rt. 104 over 390 will be replaced, as well as the entire sidewalk system within the project limits. New timed traffic signals, street lighting, pavement markings and signs will also be upgraded and replaced. Space for bicycles will be provided throughout the project area.

Increased capacity at the intersections will improve traffic flow thereby reducing delay and improving motorist safety. The median will provide added safety by restricting left turns across several lanes of traffic to signal controlled intersections. The frequency of accidents caused by left turn maneuvers is high.

A traffic control plan will be implemented to minimize inconvenience to travelers, businesses and residents, according to the NYSDOT. Some night work will take place to minimize delay during the daytime hours. All access to homes and businesses along West Ridge Road will be maintained. Temporary widening will maintain two lanes in either direction throughout the primary construction phase. No daytime lane closures will take place during the holiday season, between November 20 and January 10.

Utility relocation work will begin in the coming weeks and will be performed throughout the fall and winter months beginning at the west end of the project. Actual roadway construction will begin in April 2005. Work will also start in April to replace the twin bridges that carry Ridge Road over the expressway. A temporary pedestrian bridge will be built at the 390 interchange to accommodate walkers along Ridge Road. More updates will follow as the schedule is determined.

A public pre-construction meeting will be held this winter to inform the community of construction schedules, to provide contact information and answer questions from members of the community. The completion date is slated for December 2007.

The contract was awarded to Crane-Hogan Structural Systems of Spencerport.
