Red Ribbon Week observed

Students in Hilton's Northwood Elementary School walked together and tied red ribbons around the outside of the school October 25 with Physical Education Teacher Colleen Coles during national Red Ribbon Week. Students celebrated making healthy choices by choosing to walk, according to school counselor Jennifer Torres, who organized the week's events. "It's a time for kids to show they choose healthy alternatives," Torres said. Among the school's activities were a karate demonstration; a visit from the Clyde Morgan Dance Troupe; and wearing red ribbons to remind each other to lead a safe and healthy life. The Hilton School District's SOS Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force worked during 2003-04 to strengthen the district's capability to address drug and alcohol abuse prevention and intervention. Among the actions taken has been the hiring of a part-time substance counselor at Hilton High School.
