Blue Devils netters second, Hage MVP

Brockport's girl's tennis team finished second to Fairport in Division I with a 5-1 record and in the Class AA sectionals with three positions advancing on to the State Qualifier.

Most Valuable Player Kara Hage dropped her singles match during the Class AA Championship to teammate and Most Improved Player award winner Calder Mills-Lexvold, but advanced as an unseeded player to the State Qualifier before losing to the third seed.

"Kara's strong performances at first singles for nine matches allowed us to capture many of our winning meets," said head coach Tina Frank. "Her leadership and support inspired her teammates to victory while facing the most challenging opponents in our league."

Mills-Lexvold lost in the Class AA final before losing to the second seed in states. "Calder played at third singles for eight matches, then second singles for five matches before advancing in the sectionals. This degree of determination and competitiveness earned her our MIP award," said Frank.

In doubles, Kim Eichas and Caitlin Myers also advanced to the Class AA final before losing and also moved on to the state qualifier before losing. Myers was recognized as the Monroe County Scholar Athlete.

"Our team performed superbly this season. We were very fortunate to have talented singles and doubles players this season and, in situations of player illness or absence, we were able to move up our players and still win our meets. Half of our varsity squad of 24 girls will be graduating and I will miss them very much," Frank said. "Our remaining players are excited about competing next year and continuing our tradition of excellence."
