Drew Coleman of Wal-Mart presents check to Brockport Chief McCullough.

Firefighters receive community safety grant

Brockport Firefighters recently accepted a grant developed for "Community Safety Partners" by the Wal-Mart Corporation. Manager Drew Coleman contacted the chiefs to let them know that the grant totaling $1,000 was awarded to the Fire Department by Wal-Mart and the firefighters could stop by to pick up the check.

According to Chief Christian A. McCullough, the department is in need of replacing "Rescue Randy," a life-size and actual weighted manikin used in training firefighters in search and rescue techniques. Due to its size and weight, it allows for a near life-like simulation for both the trainees and veterans alike to practice dragging, lifting and removing someone who may find themselves trapped in their home or apartment.

As Chief McCullough accepted the check from Coleman, he shared with him the timing of the grant in relation to the needs of the department. "We had really hoped to replace this valued training tool, and weren't sure where the funds would come from. Now we know. Thank you and thanks to Wal-Mart for their continued support of our department."
