#1 Rangers advance on Farnsworth goal

Top-seeded Spencerport advanced to the semi-finals of the Section Five boy's soccer tournament by defeating Brighton in double overtime 1-0. Senior Chris Farnsworth drilled a one-timer into the net off Tom Graham's pass from the left wing to end the game.

"Brighton played strong in the back and came out hard," said Farnsworth. "We didn't play our game, but they played a game earlier in the week to get here, so they were more tired than we were in overtime."

The Rangers had the better of the scoring chances early as Farnsworth, Tim Schirmer and Domenic Colaprete missed on opportunities in the first half. Brighton was stopped on their best chance when goalkeeper Drew Hopkins swatted a shot away while falling into the net and the rebound being shot wide.

Spencerport had five more chances in the second half and had a goal in the 70th minute disallowed due to a handball. Each team had a chance in the first overtime and the Barons had a header go just over the crossbar in the second overtime before Farnsworth's game winner in the 116th minute of play.

"That's as good a team as we've played all year," said Rangers head coach Tom Etsler. "Having to play earlier in the week made them a little sharper early than we were."

Hopkins made 11 stops in net for Spencerport in playing probably his best game of the year. The Rangers advanced to play fifth-seeded Irondequoit in the Class AA semi-finals. The winner will face the winner of the other semi-final between Webster-Thomas and Greece Athena.
