Rangers season ends on own goal,
all-star teams announced

Just days after winning their first Section Five boy's soccer title since 1979 with a 4-3 win over Webster Thomas, Spencerport saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Penfield on an own goal just two minutes into the second half in the State qualifier.

Penfield earned the better scoring opportunities in the first half on midfielder Mike Lentine's shot, which glanced through the hands of Rangers goalkeeper Drew Hopkins and off the left post and again two minutes later as Dan Pulito hit the side of the net.

In the 47th minutes, a Penfield shot deflected off a Ranger and into the net off the left post for what proved to be the only tally of the game.

Spencerport had several chances to tie the game including in the 52nd minute when Chris Somers' direct kick was punched out by the Penfield keeper and Chris Farnsworth's rebound attempt was blocked. In the 62nd minute, Tom Graham outraced a defender and got off a shot that was knocked away by a sprawling Kyle Zinter in goal. Then, with less than three minutes remaining, a Graham pass was deflected on net where the Patriots keeper backed his body into the net but kept the ball outside to preserve the win.

"We had our chances," said Rangers Head Coach Tom Etsler. "They're probably going to win the state championship, but we put together a great season. We won a championship that no one can take away."

Junior back Andy Morgan was charged with marking player of the year Jamarr Miller and held him off the scoreboard. The shutout was the only time all season the Rangers were held without a goal as they finished 16-3-1.

Seventeen local players were named to the first or second team of the 2004 Monroe County Boys Soccer All-League Team and two coaches were named Coach of the Year.

Spencerport led the way with seven players selected to the Division II squad: Chris Somers, Chris Farnsworth, Tom Graham and Nick Droegmoeller to the first team and Drew Hopkins, Jason Bloom and Domenic Colaprete to the second team.

In Division I, five players from Churchville-Chili were selected: Chris Brugger and Brett Faro to the first team and Mike Malone, Jordan Andercolich and Drew Ketchum to the second unit. Hilton's Jim Eichas was also a first team member with teammate Dan Reynolds on the second team. Brockport's Justin Worboys was a first team defender with Brandon Kulp and Bohdan Klymochko both second team All-League.

Hilton's Paul Davis and Spencerport's Tom Etsler were both named Coach of the Year in Division I and Division II respectively.
