Bees win state title

D'Errico MVP

Second seeded Byron-Bergen defeated top seed Honeoye to win the Section Five Class CC title and went on to defeat Candor from Section IV to win their first girls' volleyball state title.

After sweeping LeRoy and Warsaw in the sectional quarterfinals and semi-finals respectively, the Bees trailed Honeoye two games to none before rallying to win three straight for their third straight title.

Byron-Bergen defeated Lyons in the state qualifier held at Victor in three games and beat Westfield to advance. At SUNY Cortland for the state finals, the Bees lost the first game to Candor 25-23 before winning the second 25-16. Candor took the third game 25-17 before the Bees rebounded for 25-23 and 25-20 wins in the final two games to take the match and the state title.

Freshman Alyssa D'Errico finished the final match with 18 kills and Bobbi Nelson had 14 digs. D'Errico was named MVP of the Sectional Tournament in Class CC with teammates Raylyn Maher and Shavaughn Bartz joining the All-Tournament Team. D'Errico and Dana DeSerio were both named to the All-State third team.
