Holley teachers sign contract

The Holley Board of Education and teachers' union have agreed on a teachers' contract for the next four years.

"The board is pleased that there were no protracted negotiations. The process was both quick and professional, a win-win situation for both sides," said Board President John Heise.

Concessions made by the teachers that will allow the district to get a handle on its financial issues were key to the successful contract negotiations. Teachers agreed to switch health plans, which lowered the district's costs significantly while still meeting the needs of the teachers and their families. At the same time, the contract recognizes the Holley teachers' strengths helping the district to retain quality teachers and recruit good ones to replace those who retire.

"With both sides being positive about the process, there are no wounds to heal and we can begin to address our instructional issues right away," Heise said.

The Holley teachers were working under an extended contract. Superintendent Mary Anne Kermis negotiated a one-year settlement when she joined the district in January, so both sides could get to know each other before beginning the negotiation process.

"The teachers are happy that the district and Holley Teachers' Association could work to come to an agreement and look forward to this spirit of cooperation continuing into the future," said Holley Teachers' Association President Julie Wantuck.

The addition to the teachers' contract, contracts with custodial and clerical staff were settled. The district is now working with the transportation staff on its contract.
