Regional architecture firm to design
apartment-style housing at SUNY Brockport
The new facility will house 200 students

Plans are underway for new student housing on the SUNY College at Brockport campus. According to Interim President Dr. John B. Clark, "We are very excited about our 200-student apartment-style housing project. As SUNY Brockport grows in popularity, the demand for quality housing also increases. This new construction will help meet the growing demand."

The college currently has housing for 2,300 students on campus and demand exceeds supply each year.

The college, along with the New York State Dormitory Authority, has chosen Chaintreuil, Jensen & Stark Architects, a Western New York firm with offices in Rochester and Buffalo, to design the two-story facility, scheduled to open in fall 2007. The Dormitory Authority will manage the design and construction of the facilities.

"SUNY Brockport is changing its front door," said architect Ann Chaintreuil. The new facility will be located on the west side of Plateau Field, leaving room for phase two - another 200-student apartment facility. The architecture and landscape design of this $15-million facility will compliment the new Welcome and Visitor's Center along with the new recreation center to be completed in the fall of 2008 nearby on New Campus Drive.

Each apartment will include a full kitchen, dining room, living room, four bedrooms and two full bathrooms. They will be fully furnished and equipped with Internet access, air conditioning, cable television and parking will be available.

"Our students are enthusiastically behind this project. More than 2,500 students responded to a questionnaire indicating that they wanted apartment-style housing with the convenience of living on campus," said Ray Di Pasquale, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs. "And with the new recreation center across the street, students will have all their needs within walking distance."

Preliminary designs are expected early next year, according to college representatives.
