C-C's Smith sets school volleyball record

Senior Rachel Smith set a Churchville-Chili school record for career blocks in a 25-20, 25-23, 25-17 sweep over Brockport in girls volleyball. Smith entered the match needing just one block for the mark and registered four, breaking Mary Voorheis' previous record set between 1996-99.

The Blue Devils led all three games early, but the Saints were able to battle back. Brockport led by four points in the first game before C-C went on a 13-4 run to close including aces served by Carley Youngman and Stephanie Urban and a pair of kills by Jessie Pegler.

The Blue Devils led 15-11 in the second game and the game was tied 21-21 before the Saints picked up three of their final four points on errors. Aces by Brockport's Amanda Streb and Jackie Steubing helped give the Blue Devils an 8-3 advantage in the final game before C-C again found their rhythm which included an 8-0 late run to seal the match.

Smith finished with six kills, three aces and eight digs for the Saints. Pegler led with 10 kills and added seven digs while Erin Leonard had nine digs and 14 assists and Julian Raines chipped in seven kills. Steubing led the Blue Devils with eight kills and five digs with Shaitria Doward picking up four aces and Youngman dishing out seven assists.
