Monroe County Legislature
approves tax extension for some military

The Monroe County Legislature approved legislation that provides National Guardsmen and other reserve military personnel who are deployed to active duty additional time to pay their Monroe County property taxes. The measure passed the legislature unanimously.

The legislation will take effect immediately and will apply to the tax bills going out to residents in January 2005. The measure will give National Guardsmen and other reserve military personnel who have been deployed to active duty a ninety-day extension, from the end of their deployment, to pay their county property taxes. The extension is aimed to prevent any late fees or penalties from occurring while the individual is on deployment.

In 2003, NYS Governor George Pataki signed into law legislation known as the Patriot Plan which will avoid potential penalties of late payments and offer benefits to servicemen and women. This law authorizes counties to provide this extension to deployed military personnel on a county by county basis.

The legislation will be in effect when the Monroe County Department of Treasury sends county property tax bills to residents this coming January.
