First Bible Baptist Church plans new facility
A sign stating "Future Home of First Bible Baptist Church" will be unveiled at 990 Manitou Road this coming Sunday, January 2 at 3 p.m. in a brief dedication ceremony. First Bible Baptist Church has acquired 96 acres of property on Manitou Road in the Town of Greece for construction of its new facility. more

Hilton Fire Department elects officers for 2005
The Hilton Fire Department held their annual election of officers on Thursday, December 9. Mark Kalen was elected chief of the department for a two year term. more

Monroe County Christmas tree recycling options
Town of Chili (889-2630) - Town residents may drop off trees in the designated area at the Highway Department located at 3235 Chili Avenue throughout January. Curbside pick-up and wood chips are available. more

Photographer's work recognized in association contest
Walter Horylev, a freelance photographer for Westside News Inc., earned two awards at a recent Photographic Society of America competition. At the event in Minneapolis, Minnesota in September, photographers from the Fort Worth Star Telegram critiqued the work of photojournalists from around the world. more

Spencerport scout plans book drive for Wilmot Cancer Center
There's nothing like a good book to take your mind off daily stresses. A Spencerport Boy Scout hopes to offer those kinds of distractions to people with cancer and in turn, earn himself the Eagle Award. more

ABC Quilt Workshop Jan. 8 in North Chili
The first ABC Quilt Workshop of 2005 will be Saturday, January 8, at the United Methodist Church of North Chili, 2200 Buffalo Road from 9 a.m. to noon. Area "ABCers" made over 200 baby quilts for at-risk children at the 2004 workshops. more

Birds Eye donates to Lakeside Health System
A gift from Birds Eye Foods of Brockport will benefit the Lakeside Health System. The employees of Birds Eye Foods donated proceeds from their sale of breast cancer awareness pins. more

Foster parenting workshop set in Hamlin
A seminar on foster parenting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 18 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlin Town Hall. It is presented by Metrix Marketing, Inc. more

Heart in Hand Quilts go to Lakeside patients
"Every year Heart in Hand Quilts typically make and donate over 50 beautiful custom made quilts. This year, four wonderful quilts were donated to patients receiving chemotherapy at Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport. more

Spencerport hosts RPO 'Around the Town' concert
Spencerport High School will host the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at its Performing Arts Center on Thursday, January 20, at 7:30 p.m. The free "Around the Town" concert series began in 1991 and is designed to take the orchestra out of the concert hall and into communities. Admission is free and open to the public. more

Village of Hilton seeks nominations for "Citizen of the Year" award

Local first place winners for the Lions International Peace Poster Contest were 6th grader Jessica Lovering and 7th grader MacKenzi Martin. The Churchville Lions Club sponsored separate contests at the Churchville-Chili Intermediate and Junior High Schools. more

Two Brockport students in Brockport's Christ Community Church School have won the top awards in the seventh and eighth grade level of the Monroe County division of the 2004 Fire Prevention Essay Contest. more

Competition heats up fire safety essays
Two Churchville-Chili students won prizes in the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen's Association (MCVFA) Fire Safety essay contest. Nkasiobi Akpaka, an eighth grader, won second place for her essay, while Caitlynn Berger, a sixth grader was awarded sixth place. more

Dangers of DWI
Ogden Police Officer Steven Brown, left, brought Fatal Vision goggles to Spencerport High School health classes for students to try out. The goggles distort vision to simulate the effects of alcohol on a person's vision and coordination. more

Essay contest deadline Feb. 15
Catholic Daughters Court Nativity #931 Brockport is holding its annual essay contest for students in area schools, as well as those being home schooled. Essays are not to exceed 500 words and must be the entrant's original and creative work. more

GCC receives College of the Month recognition
Genesee Community College was named the College of the Month by the National Junior College Athletic Association, and was featured on the cover of the "JUCO Review," the organization's nationwide monthly magazine. more

Holley sixth-grader wins Eastman essay contest
Holley sixth-grader Julie Brooks was named a winner in the George Eastman Sesquicentennial Celebration Essay Contest. The contest was part of George Eastman's 150th birthday celebration and was open to fifth- and sixth-grade students in Monroe, Genesee, Ontario, Orleans and Wayne county schools. more

Holley students help those in need
Holley Jr./Sr. High School students joined forces this holiday season to help both those near and far. The Jr. High Student Council conducted their annual penny drive during lunch periods for a week in December. more

National Honor Society inducts C-C students
The Churchville-Chili chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 71 new members at a candle lighting ceremony on November 22 with Michelle Schilling as guest speaker. Parents, teachers and inductees were invited to attend a reception after the ceremony. more

Spencerport kindergarten forum set for Jan. 6
Because of the number of requests from parents wishing to voice their opinion about a full-day kindergarten option in the Spencerport Central School District, a second Kindergarten Forum has been scheduled for Thursday, January 6, at 7 p.m. in the Canal View Elementary School Library. In case of inclement weather, the forum will be held on January 10. more

Team tryouts scheduled
Tryouts for the Churchville-Chili Orioles 2005 12U and 10U Cal Ripken baseball teams will be conducted on the following dates: Saturday, January 15 at 5:30 p.m. (hitting and pitching); Saturday, January 22 at 4:30 p.m. (fielding) at Total Sports Experience, 880 Elmgrove Road in Gates. Players should attend both sessions. more
