Holley sixth-grader wins Eastman essay contest

Holley sixth-grader Julie Brooks was named a winner in the George Eastman Sesquicentennial Celebration Essay Contest. The contest was part of George Eastman's 150th birthday celebration and was open to fifth- and sixth-grade students in Monroe, Genesee, Ontario, Orleans and Wayne county schools. Brooks, the Orleans County winner, is a student in Leigh Onisk's class. She said she decided to enter the contest because she enjoys writing. She also won an award in 2003 for her entry in the New York State Disabilities Awareness Essay Contest.

"Julie is a terrific kid!" said Principal Brenda Freida. "She is very involved in the school community and we are thrilled to see her continued success."

Freida, along with Julie's parents, David and Chris Brooks, and teacher, Leigh Onisk, attended the December 6 awards presentation with Julie at the George Eastman House. The contest winner received a "behind-the-scenes" tour of the museum, passes to Genesee Country Museum and a Kodak digital camera. A Kodak digital camera was also given to Holley Elementary School.
