Festivities planned at the Susan B. Anthony House
The New York State "Susan B. Anthony" day will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 15, commemorating the day the noted advocate for women's rights was born 185 years ago. Legislation establishing the honor was signed by Governor George Pataki on November 5. more

Local resident serves in AmeriCorps
Kelly Jo Smith, from Hilton, began training for 11 months of service with the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program. Founded in 1994, AmeriCorps is a residential national service program created to improve the environment, enhance education, increase public safety, address unmet human needs, and assist with disaster relief. more

Ms. McCorry goes to Washington
Following more than two decades of service to Monroe County, Becky McCorry will be bidding the area farewell when she accepts a position with the national American Red Cross Office in Washington, D.C. She will become the Supervisor of Advanced Disaster Services. more

Ogden Librarian shares 'Citizen of the Year' honor
Patty Uttaro experienced a rare speechless moment when she was told the Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce named her 'Citizen of the Year.' Uttaro was recognized for her service to the community through her work at the Ogden Farmers' Library where she has worked since 1996. As soon as she was over the shock, Uttaro was quick to deflect the credit. more

Remains of Eastern Elk unearthed
The remains of a rare Eastern elk were unearthed on Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in October 2004 during the construction of a dike in Mohawk Pool to improve wetland habitat for wildlife. Radiocarbon dating revealed that the remains were nearly 9,500 years old. The elk was a mature 12-point bull approximately five years of age when it died, according to Refuge Biologist Paul Hess. more

Robert Tutty, former newspaper
owner, dies in Florida at age 85

In the early 1960s, Robert Tutty began to see a trend in the communities of western Monroe County. He saw the small towns growing, demanding more goods and services and the people needing an expanded means of communication and printing services. more

Spencerport's village administrator resigns
After serving for more than four years as the administrator for the Village of Spencerport, Al Scheg has tendered his resignation effective January 31. more

Spencerport family raises guide dog puppy
The Don Lowe family, volunteer puppy raisers for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, have just seen their puppy graduate as a full-fledged guide dog. Ballou, a black female Labrador Retriever, had been with the Lowe family since she was just eight weeks old. Now fully trained to be part of a Guiding Eyes team, Ballou will be a working guide dog with Gertrude Moylan in Connecticut. more

The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) announced that counties in the Rochester area will receive nearly $1.4 million in funding for child support programs. more

The Catholic parishes of St. Leo in Hilton, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Hamlin, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Brockport and St. John the Evangelist in Spencerport are joining together to sponsor a Lenten Retreat. more

Common Sense Parenting, a practical, skill-based parenting program that can be applied to every family, will be offered for Hilton area parents at the Hilton Community Center beginning dates: March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and April 6 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for six consecutive Wednesdays. more

Full-day kindergarten program recommended in Spencerport
Parents of kindergarten age children in the Spencerport School district may be looking at a full day program. The committee charged with studying the options for full-day kindergarten recommended the district adopt a full day kindergarten program at the January 25 board meeting. more

Local elementary school helps families of the Tsunami
The elementary children at St. John's the Evangelist School of Spencerport have collected $413.50 in their "Families Helping Families" Program. The children were asked to help these unfortunate families by making donations with money that they have actually "earned." more

Parents support test-taking
students with "care packages"

Students at Spencerport's Cosgrove Middle School facing midterm exams January 26-28 got extra support from their parents, who signed up with the school to have "care packages" delivered January 25 to their students. The packages included various candy and a note from their parents. more

Training Center accepting applications
The SUNY Rochester Educational Opportunity Center (REOC) is accepting applications for its spring 2005 career training and academic preparation programs and courses that start in February and March. REOC provides adults, 17 and older, the skills for a first career or college entrance, a change in career, or for upward mobility within the workforce. more

Rangers give top-ranked Eagles a scare
Irondequoit had lost only one game all season and Spencerport had yet to win and had tied two. But on any given day ... the Rangers gave the state's top-ranked ice hockey team all they could handle for half the game before succumbing 3-0 at Lakeshore Rinks. more

The Victors gymnasts compete
The Victors Gymnastics Team of Greece completed in the 19th annual Leatherstocking Invitational, January 15-16 in Utica. The Victors' Team placed first overall in Level 4, third overall in Level 5 and third overall in Level 6 team competitions. more
