The American Cancer Society's annual Daffodil Days has returned with a twist. Daffodils can now be sent through cyberspace. more

Area stables pull together to support therapeutic riding program
On February 26, the First Annual Greater Rochester Horseman's Winter Classic will take place at Paterson Stable, 2009 Harris Road in Penfield. The event will benefit Heritage Christian Stables' Therapeutic Riding Program for children and adults with developmental disabilities which is operated by Heritage Christian Services. Organizers are anticipating 100 riders from 11 local barns to participate in the event. more

Chili Public Library open on Sundays
Assemblymember Susan John (131st District) secured $8,400 for the Chili Public Library, allowing the facility to stay open on Sundays. more

Enchanted Gardens is theme of GardenScape
The GardenScape Professionals Association, a not-for-profit organization and producers of GardenScape, Greater Rochester's Flower & Garden Show, has announced the theme for the 2005 show to be held March 17-20 at the Dome Center in Henrietta. "Enchanted Gardens" is the theme which will feature more than 20 'enchanting' gardens, over 80 vendors and daily seminars by horticultural experts. more

Families urged to take advantage of Earned Income Tax Credit
As the April 15 deadline to file taxes for 2004 approaches, Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester/Chili/Riga/Rush/Wheatland) is encouraging Monroe County's working families to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit. more

Foster parent recruitment initiative planned
Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks launched a new foster parent recruitment initiative for Monroe County. Brooks unveiled a new interactive kiosk that will be used as an information center for potential foster parents in our community. The kiosk will be located at various locations throughout the county this year. more

Monopoly tournament fundraiser planned
The Learning for Life Division of Otetiana Council, in cooperation with the Greater Rochester Jaycees, is hosting a Monopoly Tournament on Friday, March 11, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rochester Club Ballroom, 120 East Avenue. Registration is $40 per person, and includes game materials, food and drink tickets. more

Most Precious Blood celebrates 75th Anniversary
Most Precious Blood Church celebrates its 75th Anniversary on March 6, 2005 beginning with an Anniversary Mass at 219 Stenson Street at 11:15 a.m. followed by a gala dinner at the Diplomat Banquet Center on Lyell Avenue at 1 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person with a choice of boneless stuffed chicken or roast sirloin of beef. more

New law requires booster/safety restraints for children
Beginning March 27, a new state law will require children ages four, five and six to use booster seats or other appropriate child safety restraints when traveling in an automobile. more

Parma Snowfest well attended
Record crowds attended Parma's Snowfest Celebration on February 5 at Town Hall Park. The Hilton Sno-Flyers were well represented, as 14 of their sleds kept busy giving snowmobile rides and down at the pond Parks Director Joe Petricone and his staff set up and coordinated several ice fishing huts. more

Residents called to active military service
eligible for extension on property taxes

Local residents who have been deployed into active military service are eligible for an extension on their property taxes. Those interested in applying for the extension can download an application form from the Monroe County web site at www.monroecounty.gov. more

Special Sitters Program training sessions planned
Parents of children with developmental disabilities need time away from home as much as anyone, but finding someone to care for their son or daughter can often be a problem. In response to this widely felt need, The Arc of Monroe County has established the Special Sitters Program which educates individuals over the age of 14 in how to care for people with special needs. more

Valentine's Day is more than
hearts and flowers for local couples

Dancing, arrow-wielding Cupids, hearts, flowers and, of course, candy will mark Valentine's Day, February 14, for most couples. Even young children get in on the act by exchanging cards in school and giggling over candy conversation hearts. We've found several couples whose traditions and stories seem to embody the meaning of this hearts and flowers holiday. more

Widespread flu causing severe decline in blood donations
The American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region, says that widespread flu throughout the region has had a negative impact on blood collections. They are making an urgent call for healthy blood donors to give blood as soon as possible to help prevent a blood shortage. more

Eagle Scout project
Joseph Sinopoli, a senior at Brockport High School and Boy Scout in Troop 111, earned the rank of Eagle Scout on January 13. His Eagle project was to build a meditation pavilion with benches at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Brockport. more

Five names have been tossed into the hat for three available trustee seats in the Village of Holley for the March 15 elections. more

New Yorkers risk losing millions in tax refunds
Unclaimed refunds totaling nearly $171 million are awaiting New Yorkers who failed to file an income tax returns for 2001, the Internal Revenue Service announced. In order to collect the money, a return must be filed with the IRS no later than April 15, 2005. more

Ogden home destroyed by fire
On February 5, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Spencerport firefighters were called to Brewerton Drive for a house fire. One quint (ladder truck) from Chili was called to the scene to assist. more

Slate set for Spencerport elections
Village of Spencerport residents will be asked to choose between incumbent Mayor Ted Walker and political newcomer Merritt Rahn as they both seek the mayoral seat in the village's March elections. Rahn serves as chief of police in Greece. more

Hilton School District seeking nominations
for HCSTA "Teacher of the Year"

The Hilton Central School District is seeking nominations for the 2006 Teacher of the Year. Criteria includes more than five years of exceptional service to the district, active involvement in the Hilton community; must be a teacher who has made substantial impact on the lives of their students and colleagues; and is a current member of the Hilton Central Schools Teachers Association (HCSTA). more

Kendall named top fundraiser
by American Heart Association

Kendall Elementary School has been named a "Northeast Affiliate Top 10" by the American Heart Association for raising $9,000 in its Hoops for Heart fundraiser last year. Kendall came in sixth place out of all participating schools in the northeast United States. more

Nationwide ACT test April 9 for college-bound students
College-bound high school students can take the ACT Assessment on April 9, 2005, the next nationwide test date. The registration postmark deadline is March 4. Late registration postmark deadline is March 18 (an additional fee is required for late registration). more

Scholarship foundation established
The Margaret A. McGrath Charitable Foundation was established to benefit students who reside in the towns of Sweden and Hamlin. McGrath passed away in 2003 and as part of her estate bequest, she designated the establishment of a private foundation for college scholarships. Under the bequest, funds were set aside for the foundation. more

Students compete in Science Olympiad
Area high school students competed in the Regional High School Science Olympiad at SUNY Brockport recently. The students demonstrated their knowledge of cell biology, chemical reactions, earth processes, fossils, genetics, human disease, mapping, forestry, polymers, simple machines and the experimental method. more

SUNY Brockport professor recognized
Osman Yasar, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Computational Sciences at SUNY College at Brockport, has been recognized as one of the "Top 30 Most Successful Turks in the World" by the internationally recognized Turkish magazine "Hürriyet" in its New Year's special edition. more

Teacher programs receive state approval
Monroe Community College has received approval from the New York State Education Department (SED) and the State University of New York to offer associate degrees in early childhood, childhood and adolescence teacher education. more

Coats for Seniors program
County Executive Maggie Brooks and County Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo have launched the first annual "Coats for Seniors" program. The program, which is sponsored by Monroe County's Office for the Aging, will distribute donated winter coats to seniors in need across Monroe County. more

Computer assistance for seniors
Noel Reyner, computer instructor, assists Chuck and Bev Waffle in the use of e-mailing on the computer. The Waffles were surprised to learn how fast they could e-mail Chuck's son in Australia. more

Award recognizes graduate's contributions
A new award was founded during the 2004-2005 football season at Churchville-Chili Central School District. In honor of their childhood friend, two Chili residents, Nick Perna and Jason Landers and more than 70 supporters helped create the Mason E. Stacey Memorial Award to be given to an outstanding senior football player. more

Boley's 25 leads Blue Devils
Senior Gabrielle Boley closed out her regular season high school basketball career with a 25 point - 20 rebound effort to lead Brockport to a 53-42 victory over Hilton. more

Bright Raven Gymnastics boys earn medals
Bright Raven Gymnastics boys team competed in a USA Gymnastics Chill-Out Challenge Invitational January 30 at the Gymnastic Training Center in Penfield earning many medals. more

Free-throw winners announced
Two Hilton youth are among the recent winners in a Basketball Free-Throw Shooting Contest sponsored by the St. Leo's Knights of Columbus. After winning the local competition in Hilton, several youth went to St. Jude's School, where they competed against other area children. more

Holley Cheerleaders win first place
Holley JV and Varsity Cheerleaders won first place at the Genesee Region Competition held at Kendall High School January 22. This is their tenth consecutive year for winning the title. They also won the Grand Champion trophy. more

Holley Jr. Hawks football camp set
The Holley Jr. Hawks football camp will be a place to learn football techniques, skills and conditioning. more

Rangers fall to Eastridge
Spencerport outscored Eastridge 33-24 in the second and fourth quarters, but could not overcome a slow start in a 54-49 loss to the Lancers in boy's basketball on senior night. more

Ultimate Cheer All Stars earn first place
The Victors Gymnastics' Ultimate Cheer All Stars competed in the CNY Winter Cheer Classic held in Utica on Saturday, February 5. The team placed first in the Large Team Senior All Star Division. The team girls' parents placed first in the Parent Team Division. more

Victors Gymnasts compete at I Love NY Cup
The Victors Gymnastics Team of Greece competed in the I Love NY Cup, February 5 and 6 in Binghamton. The Victors' Team placed first overall in Level 4, second overall in Level 6 and second overall in Level 7 team competitions. more

Victors Men's Gymnastics competes at Polar Bear Classic
The Victors Men's Gymnastics Team of Greece competed in the Polar Bear Classic February 5 and 6 in Syracuse. The Level 6 team placed second overall in the team competition. more

to feature Olympian Abby Wambach

Brockport High School Girls Basketball Coach Kathy Boughton, Rochester daily newspaper sports columnist and Rochester Press-Radio Club Vice President Scott Pitoniak, the New York State West Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development Program and 2004 Olympic Soccer Gold Medalist Abby Wambach will be featured at the 27th Annual WHAM Sportswomen of the Year Awards Luncheon. more
