John Fodge, 92,
lifelong farmer

Lifelong Churchville farmer, John Fodge, who was 92 when he passed away on January 29, loved horses. He worked with them all his life, and when tractors made them obsolete for farm work, he refused to give them up. They were his passion.

His great-niece, Kim Fodge Flagler, recalls a time when a horse dragged him hard enough to break his leg, but her uncle's only concern was for the horse. It was only fitting that when Fodge died, horses carried him to his final resting place.

John and his brother, Jim, worked the same farm on Westside Drive that their father had worked before them. Until they retired, the brothers farmed just under 300 acres, growing hay and barley. They also took care of 120 head of dairy cattle.

"He always had horses on the farm. Up until about five years ago there were always horses," his nephew, Jim Fodge, said. It was his nephew who posed the idea to honor his uncle by having a team of horses in his funeral procession.

A mutual friend put Fodge in contact with Patty Ryan who had a team of Belgian Horses. Ryan's horse-drawn carriage was mainly used for weddings and other celebrations, but she had used it for a funeral in the past. "The (Fodge) family came out to see the carriage the night before the funeral," Ryan said. "I told them we had to take out the back carriage seat and they would have to build a platform, and it had to sit sideways, to hold the casket." The Fodge nephews did just that and the next day the carriage was ready to carry their uncle's casket to St. Vincent's Cemetery in Churchville.

By noon on the day of the funeral the sun came out and, according to the family, it was one of the nicest winter days there could be. The procession from St. Vincent De Paul's Church to the cemetery was less than a 1/4 mile long and family and friends walked beside the carriage. When asked if she was nervous about the ride, Ryan explained that she wasn't worried about her team. "I would never use the younger horses, but Babe and April are 10 and 20 years old. They're very trustworthy."

John Fodge was predeceased by his wife, Fern. They had no children. He had two brothers, Jim and Charley, and a sister, Mary, who is deceased. He is survived by nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews.
