SUNY Brockport professor wins award of excellence

SUNY College at Brockport Associate Professor of Communication Carvin Eison has been named winner of the Award of Excellence in the Documentary portion of the Broadcast Education Association 2005 Faculty Video Competition for his documentary "July '64."

The documentary tells the story of the riots that occurred in Rochester in the summer of 1964. Eison was just a young boy when the riots broke out on July 24, 1964. The National Guard was called in - the first time to a northern city - to end the three-day melee that started when violence erupted at a street dance on a hot summer night. July '64, a feature-length documentary directed by Eison, gives voice to the people who lived it and tells the story of three days of conflict and unrest that altered the course of history in Rochester. It also incudes a never-before-released recording of Duke Ellington performing "Night Creature" with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra August 6, 1964, less than a month after the riots.

Eison will receive his award at the Broadcast Education Association (BEA)'s convention on April 12 in Las Vegas. Eison's receiving this award represents the first time a SUNY Brockport faculty member has won in the faculty competition division.
