Area wrestlers go on to states

Five area wrestlers, including two from Spencerport and two from Brockport, won their SuperSectional weight class to advance to the state tournament March 4-5 at Pepsi Arena in Albany.

Brockport's Trevor Irwin won his 96 lb. championship match 6-4 in overtime and was scheduled to wrestle Vinnie Cocozello from PSAL-Curtis in the first round of states. Teammate Alex Nwaehujor went to double overtime before squeaking out a 2-1 win to advance at 215 lb. He wrestled Ed Bordas from Section 9 Valley Central in the first round.

For the Rangers, Jared Plucknette won the final 5-3 at 189 lb. to face Brian Scher from MacArthur of Section 8 in the first round. Tom Rodak had little trouble in his championship match winning 7-2 at 275 lb. He received a first round bye and will wrestle the winner of Michael Stanley (PSAL-Truman) and Darnell Marc (CHSAA-Holy Trinity) in the second round.

Byron-Bergen's Mike McNally also advanced to states with a 13-4 decision at 199 lb. in Division II. McNally also received a first round bye and will battle the winner of Josh Coun (Section 9-Red Hook) and Sean Fox (PSAL-Petrides).

Spencerport won the Section Five Class AA wrestling title and head coach Bill Jacautot was named Coach of the Year.
