Cooperative Extension hosts Family Folk Fair

The fifth annual Family Folk Fair was held Sunday, March 13 at the Orleans County 4-H Fairgrounds. Sponsored by Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension, Orleans County Youth Bureau and Go Art!, more than 300 people attended the event that featured entertainment, demonstrations and displays celebrating local folk art and culture.

Tonia Loren began the day, telling Native American stories of how the rabbit got its shape and how maple syrup came to be used. Loren and her family also demonstrated Mohawk Corn Soup as well as Native American tools and artifacts.

Ted McGraw and Friends got the fairgoers in the mood for St. Patrick's Day with their Irish music while people enjoyed the display of a Polish doll house as well as demonstrations on creating butter lambs. Reality Check was there displaying their program activities on tobacco use and awareness. The Green Clover 4-H Club provided quilt squares for participants to draw a family tradition. The club will then put together the quilt and display it at the Orleans County 4-H Fair as well as next year's Folk Fair.

Ron and Nancy OneSong concluded the day with a variety of music. The Odds and Ends 4-H Club guided participants through the creation of mosaics using different types of beans.
