Churchville-Chili seniors take sports careers to the next level

Five Churchville-Chili seniors will be continuing their sports careers at a higher level. They signed their letters of intent during a ceremony in the high school media center, observed by administration, coaches, family and friends.

Emilie Rowe received a full scholarship to the University of Vermont to play soccer. She chose the school from among other offers, as she loved its down-to-earth, friendly atmosphere. She will be studying nutrition and physical therapy.

Katie Sullivan decided to head to Southern Wesleyan University to play basketball. She said her decision was made for a couple reasons: she likes their basketball coach, having met him during clinics at Roberts Wesleyan College, and she loves the idea of living in a warmer climate. She also received a full scholarship.

Rachael Smith will attend the University of Buffalo with a full scholarship to play Division I volleyball. "UB has strong academics and I wanted to go to a good school," she says. She will major in computer science.

Tom Hammel is considering scholarship offers from Wagner College and Central Connecticut College to potentially play quarterback for their respective football teams and will make a final decision soon. Football is his "favorite thing in the world," he said. Hammel plans to major in childhood education.

Rich Amundson has accepted a combination athletic and academic scholarship to play lacrosse at the University of Hartford. He said he met their coach during tryouts for the Empire States Games and felt a mutual respect, though he was sidelined from the games by an injury. He plans to major in liberal arts and is considering a career in education and coaching.
