Contributions invited for Brockport's new Welcome Center

Residents of the Brockport area are invited to donate bushes and trees to the landscaping planned for the new Welcome Center on the Erie Canal in Brockport. The end of April is the anticipated date for completion of the Welcome Center and a formal dedication ceremony will soon be announced.

Area residents may purchase one or more of the items on the landscaping planting list. The plantings are being provided by Salmon Creek Nursery at a 25 percent discount. Interested donors may visit the nursery at 960 Salmon Creek Road to see the designated trees and bushes on display and make a purchase. The plantings are expected in stock by April 15.

The items may be purchased "in honor of " or "in memory of" an individual if desired. Prices range from about $7 for Ornamental Grass to about $200 for a Sunburst Locust Tree. Other plantings are: Potentilla, Pyramidal Arborvitae, Austrian Pine, Dwarf Spreading Juniper, Burning Bush and Kwanzan Cherry.

Names of donors, unless anonymous, and names of persons honored or memorialized, will be listed in the printed program for the dedication ceremony and permanently posted in the center.

The landscape planting will be done by volunteers from the Brockport Garden Club under the supervision of Mark Dunham, owner of Back to Eden Landscaping in Brockport.

The Welcome Center on Water Street - immediately adjacent to Brockport's historic Main Street -- will enhance the canal dock and Harvester Park area, according to village representatives. It will provide information for boaters, hikers and bikers, as well as meeting space for community organizations. A gateway sculpture will be located near the center, designed and created by nationally-renowned local metal sculptor Bill Stewart who is contributing his skill. Materials for the sculpture will be paid for with funds raised in a community auction last fall. "The Welcome Center will be a beautiful attraction and a boost to tourism and commerce in Brockport," Brockport Mayor Jo Matela said. "With art work and landscaping contributed by our area citizens, the community can feel special ownership and pride."
