Rangers win first-ever varsity lacrosse contest

Brand new varsity teams sometimes take several seasons to win their first game, but Spencerport shortened that time span ten-fold with a 9-5 boy's lacrosse victory over Gates Chili in the first regular season home game in the team's history.

On a unit featuring just two seniors, junior Robert Stojanov scored one goal in each quarter - four in all - to lead the offensive attack. The Rangers trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the first quarter before rallying on goals by Stojanov and Patrick Decker to take a 3-2 lead. The Spartans scored twice in the second quarter sandwiching Stojanov's second tally as the game was tied 4-4 at half-time.

The Rangers defense of Cameron Sformo, Parker Blackburn, Stephen Balcerak, Marc Hosey and goalkeeper Ryan Konko then held the Spartans scoreless for over 20 minutes. That, more of a ball control offensive philosophy and goals by Stojanov and Decker helped the Rangers build a 6-4 lead heading into the final stanza.

Stojanov scores his fourth goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter on a behind the back shot that found the corner of the net and Tyler Hintz made it 8-4 just three minutes later. The Spartans broke through with just under six minutes remaining before Daniel Marino iced the contest with an assist from Jeff Konko.

The Rangers outshot Gates Chili 32-28 and were 1 for 7 with the extra man as they evened their overall record at 1-1.
