Brockport to address rooming home situation
Eighteen rooming/boarding houses are under the microscope as part of two new codes Village of Brockport officials are studying. There are housing situations within the village in which college students are rooming in attics or basements that have been converted to sleeping areas and homes in which students utilize communal kitchen and bathroom space. more

Chili putting together map, community guide
Tracy Logel, supervisor of the Town of Chili, announced the development of a new, official yourTownTM Map and Community Guide of the Town of Chili to be sent to all town households in the fall. The Town of Chili will work with Map Works, inc. more

Civil War letters to be read at Morgan Manning House
Thomas R. Taber, of Albion, will speak at the Morgan Manning House about his book Hard Breathing Days. The book is a collection of 160 letters written by Cora Beach Benton to her husband, Charles, who was in the 17th New York Light Artillery during the Civil War. more

Churchville residents will have broadband services over powerlines
New Visions PLC, LLC and the Village of Churchville have signed an agreement for New Visions to utilize the village's electric grid to offer affordable high-speed broadband services to Churchville residents and businesses. more

Entertainers scheduled for Wheel Fest
Several entertainers will take part in Hamlin Wheel Fest from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. The 8th annual festival will be held at Hamlin Fireman's Field, Route 19, Hamlin and area residents are reminded to save the date. more

Hamlin scout achieves Eagle rank
David Schreiner from Troop 324, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony on Sunday, April 10, was honored by the Hamlin Fire Department. more

Holley's preliminary budget shows stable tax rate
Under the proposed budget for the Village of Holley, taxpayers will not see an increase in their tax rate. Mayor Stanley "Skip" Carpenter said the rate will remain steady at $14.08 per $1,000 of assessed value. Electric rates will not change. more

Spencerport adopts budget, residents to see increase
Village of Spencerport officials adopted the 2005-2006 spending plan at their pubic hearing on April 6. more

Spencerport approves $58 million proposed school budget
The Spencerport Central School District Board of Education unanimously approved on Tuesday, April 12 a $58,130,441 school budget for the 2005-06 school year that will go before district voters on May 17. The new budget calls for an estimated 2.12 percent tax rate increase. more

Spencerport celebrates 'Day of Caring'
Volunteers in the Village of Spencerport will be out in full force to celebrate the annual Day of Caring, a program sponsored by the Greater Rochester United Way. more

Volunteers needed to raise puppies for the blind
Guiding Eyes for the Blind is recruiting volunteers to raise puppies that will become guide dogs for the visually impaired. Volunteers are needed to teach foster puppies obedience and manners while socializing the pups in preparation for their future as guide dogs. more

Albion Wal-Mart receives re-zoning approval
The Albion Town Board approved rezoning a parcel of land from agricultural/residential to general business. About 130 acres of land in the Gaines Basin Road and Route 31 area are being eyed by Wal-Mart as a site of a super center in the town. more

Volunteers for Brockport's new canalside Welcome Center will begin their dockmaster/greeter orientation at the Village Hall on April 26 at 7 p.m. more

As a way to help replenish and preserve Brockport's natural tree resources, a Village of Brockport Tree Board was established. more

Dinner for a good cause
Brockport Rotary members turned out in force to work and enjoy the annual ziti dinner. Hundreds of customers were entertained by Sandy Parlato and Happy the Clown. Both donated their time and talents to make this a special event for the community. more

Law makes state forms accessible over the Internet
Assemblymember Susan John (131st District) announced a law she sponsored, making state forms available over the Internet, took effect April 7. "This law will make filling out and filing state forms and applications much easier," John said. "Now, busy New Yorkers can fill out forms in the comfort of their own homes whenever it is convenient for them." more

New jazz band announces first concert date
The newly formed Brockport Community Jazz Band announced its premier concert on April 28, at Brockport Central's Oliver Middle School. This first performance of the group is free to the public and begins at 7 p.m. more

Open house scheduled at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Alabama will be holding its annual open house on Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. more

The MadVocals from Brockport High School donated $1,000 to Lakeside Hospital. The MadVocals are a group of drama and madrigal singers and the proceeds from their performances are donated to various organizations. more

Genesee Community College announces the ground breaking ceremony of its new Student Union on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 1 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Batavia Campus. A group of college leaders will give brief highlights of the project. more

Hilton art students earn art show awards
The Finger Lakes Region Scholastic Art Exhibition, held at the Rochester Institute of Technology Bevier Gallery, annually attracts hundreds of entries in several categories including painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, photography and digital imaging. more

Hilton music teacher receives accolades
Hilton's 2004-05 Teacher of the Year and Vocal Music Instructor at Merton Williams Middle School for 33 years, Marcia Sheremeta, has been awarded a 2005 Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Musicians' Award for Outstanding Music Education as a Choral Director. more

Jumpers raise $8,291 for the American Heart Association
One hundred thirty Hilton students and their parents participated in the annual Jump Rope-A-Thon for Heart. A variety of aerobic activities were done by the students including rope jumping, "jake the snake,' pogo sticks, jumping with skip-its and hula hoops, and dancing to help fight heart disease and stroke. more

Mr. Lincoln visits Northwood
Second graders respond with living history questions in "Town Meetings." On April 5 second grade students at Northwood Elementary participated in "Town Meetings" with President Abraham Lincoln (actually actor Fritz Klein). more

Musical students
Thirteen sixth graders from Hilton's Village Elementary School were selected to participate in the Monroe County School Music Association Festival as members of the All-County Chorus which took place at Eastridge High School. more

New residence hall plans announced by SUNY Brockport
Officials from SUNY College at Brockport and the NYS Dormitory Authority outlined plans to build a $15.7-million, 200-student apartment-style residence hall at a news conference held April 14 on the Brockport campus. more

Roberts Wesleyan SIFE team wins regional competition
The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) from Roberts Wesleyan College were winners in the regional SIFE competition April 7 in Hartford, Connecticut. more

Spencerport teacher named one of nation's tops educators
President George W. Bush awarded mathematics teacher Lee Cervini, from Terry A. Taylor Elementary School in Spencerport, with the 2004 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation's highest honor for teaching in these fields. more

St. John celebrates 'Week of the Young Child'
During April the children and staff at St. John Lutheran Child Care and Preschool in Hamlin will be celebrating Week of the Young Child. more

Student designs school badge
Seventh-grader Hayley Jones' design will be on the A.D. Oliver Middle School student ID badges. Jones was the winner of an in-school contest with Lifetouch to design a logo for the badges. more

Bright Raven gymnast Alyssa Kober of Ogden earned a medal for her performance on the uneven parallel bars at the Level 7 State Championships held in Rochester. more

Soccer Midfielder signs Letter of Intent
On April 8, Hilton soccer midfielder Marina Accordo (seated) signed a letter of intent to play for Division I "Red Flash," St. Francis University of Loretto, Pennsylvania. An academic scholar and soccer star, Marina has played for the Cadets since seventh grade. more
