GCC breaks ground on student union

Genesee Community College announces the ground breaking ceremony of its new Student Union on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 1 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Batavia Campus. A group of college leaders will give brief highlights of the project. A reception will follow in the Anthony T. Zambito Gymnasium. The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary.

The new 10,500 square-foot Student Union is expected to be completed before the spring of 2006, and the project cost will be approximately $1.8 million. The facility will adjoin the northeast section of the existing Batavia Campus complex and will be used for a wide range of student activities.

College Village, the student housing complex, is within view of the new Student Union, allowing residential and commuting students to have available space for social events and exchanges, mixers and gatherings that may occur outside normal classroom hours. The space will encourage the development of the college's growing student leadership programs and for clubs and organizations to work on their service projects at different times of the week. The new Student Union also provides space for large group activities such as lectures, exhibits and global education demonstrations, a game room, the Student Government Center and a small café.
