Hilton music teacher receives accolades

Hilton's 2004-05 Teacher of the Year and Vocal Music Instructor at Merton Williams Middle School for 33 years, Marcia Sheremeta, has been awarded a 2005 Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Musicians' Award for Outstanding Music Education as a Choral Director. Presented April 7 at an RPO concert at the Eastman Theater by Christopher Seaman, music director of the RPO, the award has been presented since 1988 to enhance the understanding between musicians of the RPO and the music educators of Rochester. Award winners are recognized for the "positive influence they exert on the musicians and audiences of the future."

"I feel fortunate to have always worked with another vocal teacher," Sheremeta said. "And I'm grateful to have had as past partners Patricia Desmond, Nick Williams, Grace Adams and currently Hope Randolph."

The Merton Williams Middle School has 442 singers in 10 different choruses. Sheremeta actively encourages seventh and eighth grade boys to sing and currently 40 percent of the singers in the choral program are male. In addition to teaching, Sheremeta has also been organist and music conductor at St. Charles Borromeo in Greece for the past 27 years. She is a resident of Greece.
