Fire displaces five in Hamlin

The Hamlin Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 1:45 a.m. on May 24. Upon arrival, the first arriving engines found a two story wood frame residence with heavy fire showing on both floors of the south side. The building had been divided into six apartments. All the occupants had escaped the building prior to the fire departments' arrival.

The firefighters made short work of the exterior fire while primary searches were carried out in the apartments. An interior attack quenched the fires in the first floor apartments but the void spaces, false ceilings and arrangement of the second floor apartments made total extinguishment of the blaze more difficult. The fire was declared under control almost two hours after the first alarm.

The Hamlin Fire Department was assisted by Brockport, Morton, Walker, and the Ladies Auxiliary that provided breakfast for all companies.

The five occupants of the building were left homeless and the Red Cross is providing assistance.
