Local war veteran remembered

The New York State senate has declared June 20 as Major George Quamo Day. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit Award, Purple Heart, Presidential unit citations and many more. The resolution reads in part, "the major's intense dedication to his men, his coolness in battle and his extraordinary courage are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army" … also "in the course of American military history, there are certain individuals who are legendary for their unparalleled bravery in lending their might to the defense of our nation, Major George Quamo was one of those individuals.

Quamo died a hero at the age of 27 on April 16, 1968 during the Vietnam conflict. His remains were not discovered until six years later. He was laid to rest in Arlington Cemetery in Washington D.C. in 1974.

The late Quamo is brother to James Quamo who resides with his wife Pamela and their family in the Brockport-Spencerport area; brother to Marietta Bauer of Spencerport; the late Tefta Quamo Moses of Chappaqua, NY; Niki Quamo Steitz of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Yelka Quamo Runkle of La Canada, California; son of the late Alexander Quamo and the late Kaliroi Quamo, a long time resident of the area.
