Summer program encourages vacation reading

Senator Jim Alesi (R,C-Perinton) is again offering local students an opportunity to embark on a summer reading adventure sponsored by the Senate. This year's program, "Reading is Freedom," is designed to encourage students to continue to explore new books during school vacation.

"I want to invite all the young people in my Senate district to make reading a daily event this summer," said Senator Alesi. "Summer is the perfect time for children to sharpen their reading skills and gain a greater appreciation for books. Parents and teachers can put children on the right track by encouraging active participation in this fun and successful program."

Children are asked to read at least three books, and then summarize the books in a "Reading is Freedom" Summertime Reading Journal supplied by the senator. Each student returning a completed diary is rewarded with a special certificate.

"By pledging allegiance to reading, every participating student will receive knowledge and enjoyment from each page of the books they read. Even after the Reading Journal is filled and returned to me, I hope that the students will continue reading as a regular activity."

"Reading is Freedom" Summertime Reading Journals have been made available to schools in the 55th Senate District, and can also be obtained by calling Senator Alesi's Monroe County office at 585-223-1800.
