Parma Public Library offers summer time youth activities

The Parma Public Library will be participating in New York state's Tune In @ Your Library summer reading program. Kick-off for all ages will be Monday, June 27 at 1 p.m. with a Kids' Karaoke Party where participants can perform as a group or as a single and become the new "singing idol."

This year's summer reading program has something in it for everyone. Children from 3-years-old through elementary school can earn prizes and be entered into the grand prize drawing while teens in grades 7 through 12 can join in a reading competition with area libraries. To participate, teens need to pick up a quick book review form at the library and fill one out for each item read. The library with the highest total number of books read from June 27 through August 5 will be awarded a trophy and will host a pizza party for all the teens from participating libraries.

Other special summer programs include a DDR Competition for teens on Friday, July 1 at 1 p.m. as well as a Yu-Gi-OH Competition on Tuesday, July 12 at 1 p.m. Mike Kornrich will be on hand performing rock, country, big band and Dixieland songs in "Happy Music for Happy Kids" on Tuesday, July 19 at 1 p.m. Mary Beth Dolan, local artist, will give middle and high school teens an opportunity to learn to draw their favorite Japanese Manga style characters on Tuesday, July 26 at 1 p.m. Mike Callahan will make the calls as he teaches kids in grades 4 to 6 to line dance on Thursday, July 28 at 1 p.m. On Thursday, August 4 at 3 p.m. Jeff Curtis and Rob Linton will share insights into careers as a DJ and a radio personality. The Genesee Country Movable Museum will set up shop at the library on Monday, August 8 at 1 p.m. when museum staffers dressed in clothing from the 1800s will have hands-on activities for the kids.

There will also be weekly movies and craft projects throughout the summer. Stop in, visit the website at www.libraryweb.org/parma or call 392-8350 for information on programs.
