Hamlin house to be dismantled

Cheryl Stevens wanted to preserve her family memories by keeping a family house intact by giving it away rather than tearing it down. The cost proved too prohibitive, however.

"We got about 33 calls when we decided to give the house away," Stevens said. The original estimate to move the 940 square foot house to within six miles of its present location was between $17,000 and $20,000. Once the final estimate came in, the total crept to $30,000. The move would have involved a bond with New York state in order to use the road and would have included the hiring for four Monroe County police officials to provide an escort.

"The gentleman who was the most interested in it decided it would be cheaper to either buy or build a house on his property rather than move mine," she said.

Stevens said the house will be torn down piece by piece and she and her husband will reuse many of the pieces of wood, brick and windows in the house they are building.

"We're going to reuse the windows, the knotty pine and some of the bricks from the mantelpiece," she said. "The house just holds a lot of memories that I don't want to part with."
