Brockport's 'caring kids' wrap up the year

The Caring Kids Club, a tradition at the Brockport Ginther School for more than 13 years, teaches the kindergarten and first-graders important lessons about caring and how to give back to others through community service. Every Friday throughout the year, two students from each class were selected to participate in Caring Kids Club activities.

Administrators and special guests led the students and staff in the parade to the high school where they were welcomed by the music of the high school band. Ginther Principal Ann Sweeting thanked the students for collecting $718 for Tsunami victims through their Wave of Love program. Six volunteers were honored for helping with the program on Fridays: Shawn Bartlett, a 10th-grader who has volunteered for three years; Barbara Canham, Lori Heckleman, Paula Liucci, Rupika Wadhawan, and Ron Weiss. To conclude the program, the high school band performed and the caring kids sang "And Love Grows." The Hill Top Singers greeted students with songs as they made their way back into the Ginther School.

The biggest project of the year was sending 93 pounds of jackets and sweatshirts, 11 pounds of socks and 25 pounds of book bags to Navy Point School in Pensacola. According to the principal there, 85 percent of the children were still in shelters. Other projects included: thanking teachers, bus drivers, lunch cooks, servers and aides; hanging strings of cheerios for the birds; making bookmarks for National Book Week and collecting food and paper products for Ronald McDonald House. The students also sent cards to elderly people in the community and to Veterans in the Batavia Hospital.
