Sculpture contest open to all arts enthusiasts

The Can-imals on parade and the Cool Kids Day Block Party is on. The canned goods sculpture contest and kids party is relocated to the Brockport Arts Festival on Saturday, August 13, said Steve Appleton, Cool Kids director. Appleton said it's not too late to sign up to build a Can-imals on Parade creation. In its fourth year, the award-winning Can-imals on Parade invites teams to collect at least 1,000 cans or non-perishables that are needed by food shelves, show up on Main Street and using the cans, their imaginations and any other materials they want, build an animal-themed sculpture that could promote their agency/cause/idea in a 10' x 20' space.

Entries are judged in four categories including: Coolest; the Most Cans; Peace Award; and Gratitude Award. Prizes are awarded at the end of Cool Kids Day when all the groups disassemble the sculptures and bring food back to their own communities.

In its debut in 2002, three teams collected and donated more than 2,400 cans; in 2003, five teams from three counties raised more than 6,800 cans; and in 2004, five teams from four counties, with the help of the festival goers, raised more than 10,000 cans to benefit 11 agencies in four counties. Cans are raised by donations, collections, sponsorships.

Volunteers and sponsors are also needed for Cool Kids Day. For Can-imals application packets, call 637-3984 or coolkids@rochester.rr.com. Deadline for application is August 1. The minimum can requirement isn't due until August 15.
