Students chosen for Empire State

Two high school juniors, one from Spencerport High School and one from Churchville-Chili, have been chosen to represent the Ferris Goodridge Unit #330 and Harvey C. Noone Unit 954 Churchville of the American Legion Auxiliary. Empire Girls State sessions will be at SUNY Brockport College from June 24 to 30.

Empire Girls State is an Americanism program offering hands-on experiences in the democratic process. The juniors, from all over the state, form two political parties and learn flag etiquette, participate in flag raising and lowering, campaign, debate and then elect their own officials after they write bills and elect a governor.

Rachel Laber, of Spencerport, daughter of Mark Laber, is representing the Ferris Goodridge Unit. She is a member of the National Honor Society, high honor roll, cheerleading, women's choir, plus vice president, Junior representative for concert, Spanish club, stage drama club and has won various awards for dance. She will intern with the Hillside family agency in her senior year.

Alyshia Thomas, daughter of Sonia Pascoe Lodge, a junior at Churchville/Chili, represents the Harvey C. Noone Post. She is on high honor roll, executive council, junior representative, foreign language club, multi-cultural club, student government, varsity basketball, has won the Urban League Black Scholars Kodak Youth Leadership award, Hugh O'Brien award, Girl Scout Silver award and is a member of the church choir.
