Brockport swears in new slate of officials

A new mayor and three new trustees took the official oath of office as their careers as Village of Brockport elected officials kicked off on Wednesday, July 6.

Morton Wexler took his oath first as Brockport's new mayor, followed by elected trustees Maria Castañeda and David Wagenhauser. Mary Jo Nayman also took her oath after having been appointed by Wexler to fill his unexpired trustee seat.

Nayman, who became active in village politics after circulating a petition to prod officials to repair her street, was appointed by Wexler. A resident of the village for more than 40 years, Nayman was a school teacher for more than 30 years and has been on the landlord side of owning rental property in the village. Until recently, she owned three rental properties.

"Because I live on a fixed income and because I have been a landlord, I can understand all sides of the coin," she said. "The taxpayers will always be my main concern."

Wexler said he chose Nayman because she had shown an interest in the village by attending the meetings. "Mary Jo also understands, as a woman living by herself, what it is to live within your means and she's concerned with tax rates," he said. "She's interested and cares about what transpires in the village."

At the swearing in ceremony, presided over by Village Clerk Leslie Morelli, the new village leaders each took a moment to thank the residents for supporting them in their election bids.

The first village meeting for the new officials will be July 18. Trustee Carrie Maziarz, who has been on the board one year, rounds out the slate of elected officials.
