Fire destroys Hamlin mobile home

Hamlin firemen fought an intense fire the evening of July 11 that destroyed a mobile home on Locust Drive. Assistant Fire Chief Tom Sercu was the first to arrive on the scene and witnessed heavy black smoke and fire coming from several windows of the unoccupied home.

The first arriving fire crew battled the intense heat and blinding smoke to extinguish the blaze. The fire was knocked down quickly and totally under control in just over twenty minutes. An engine from Morton was automatically called to assist Hamlin crews in the first alarm. Brockport assisted at the scene with one engine and Walker sent an engine to fill in at the Hamlin firehouse. Hamlin Ambulance provided EMS support and set up a "rehab" area for the firemen.

The homeowners had left about thirty minutes before the fire was called in. There were no injuries. The cause is under investigation but it does not seem to be suspicious.

"It was a very good knockdown," the chief stated. "The heat and humidity required us to use more firemen than usual. The help from Morton, Walker and Brockport was very important today."
